A friend started a “blue ribbon” fund for Janelle in Pacifica. “Blue” was the six year old’s favorite color. Along with blue-ribboned donation containers, the fence at Oddstad was decorated in ribbons. When Janelle came home on July 24, she helped take the ribbons down. She had relearned how to walk and talk and move her arms. She was able to enter second grade with her classmates. Her mom signed Janelle up for ballet, hip hop and tap, all of which Janelle loved. She had taken dance before the accident. (Dance is considered excellent therapy for brain trauma.) She had short-term memory issues and worked with a tutor. She worked with a tutor all the way through college.

Power flowed into the Ng properties from a PG&E utility pole to a transformer in a crawl space above a cellphone store on the corner of 31st Avenue and International Boulevard. The electricity traveled to a second transformer in the back of the auto body shop next to the Ghost Ship. From there, wires took electricity through a hole in the wall and into the artists’ collective. One electrical meter served all three Ng-owned locations. “We need a second transformer because the building is split in half power wise, I’ve already replaced that first transformer (we had no power when it went up in flames), but the second one is too small for the loads on it as well,” Cannon wrote in an email to Kai Ng in January 2015.
